1.What is the Bivalirudin?
Bivalirudin is a direct thrombin inhibitor used as an anticoagulant to prevent blood clot formation during certain medical procedures, particularly in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), such as angioplasty, or those with unstable angina. It works by directly inhibiting thrombin, an enzyme crucial for blood clotting, thereby reducing the risk of clots without the need for antithrombin as an intermediary. Bivalirudin has a rapid onset and short duration of action, allowing for precise control of anticoagulation during medical procedures. It is often preferred for patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), as it is not associated with heparin's potential immune-mediated side effects. It is administered intravenously.
